Contest/Festival: First Nations Video Game Development Team

Summary: What if an entirely First Nations video game development team set out to create an indigenous game? Would we co-opt game development technology to rework stereotypes in commercial video games? Would we come up with unique gameplay and/or a development process rooted in our cultures? A doctoral research project out of Simon Fraser University's School of Interactive Arts & Technology in Vancouver, British Columbia is searching for motivated First Nations people who can work well in a community-oriented team and dream up and create a video game based in Anishinaabe and Cree culture (just to see them go at it about if it's Wendigo, Weendigo, Wiindigo, Witiko, Wetiko, Wihtiko, you get the idea). You don't have to be Nish or Cree to get involved, but the game content will be!

Artists ? We definitely need a lot of artists who are familiar with 3D modeling programs such as Maya or Blender (hurray for free stuff) as well as animation. It'd be nice to find people who can quickly sketch out their ideas and then also make it happen. We'll need an environment artist, character artist, and object artist who can vibe together stylistically. And if you can do it all, wow, let's give it a shot.

Programmers ? If you don't know game programming, that's okay, but expect to learn it fast. We haven't decided exactly which game engine to use since we'd rather wait until we have the team together, but we're looking on the cheaper end with independent game development tools like Microsoft XNA. We'd like to find people who can handle interface, gameplay, physics, and artificial intelligence programming (although not all necessarily in one person).

Sound ? Audio often gets neglected in small projects, but not this one. We want dedicated sound designers interested in everything from special effects to backdrop music. Games require skills in making music that can transition smoothly from one location or player state to another.

Voiceover Actors ? If you know Cree or Anishinaabe (any dialect), that's a definite plus. But if you're also a fun Blackfoot or Mi'kmaq or Squamish or Mohawk or M?tis or anyone else who is comfortable with playing out a character for audio recordings and can bring energy, we want you!

Cultural Advisors ? Although of course we have our family and friends in mind, we're also looking for people who hold knowledge in traditions, language, and stories to make sure we're wholly representing Anishinaabe and Cree culture, understanding the similarities and differences between the two. And why both cultures?
Because the producers and lead designers are a married Anishinaabe game writer and a Cree filmmaker who share traditions, stories, and words and find the places they meet.

If you're still reading, then you must still be interested. Well, what kind of game is it? Does it have a genre or even a platform yet? All we know is, it has to be cool enough that we as gamers want to play it. So let's find out together. We want a strong concept and full team by July.

The first stage of development will kick off by September and we'll go through a lot of creation and revision over about six months to get a solid prototype launched. Right now, there's no money. Surprise? If you're willing to join this out of the love for it, please get in touch. If we get a team together who wants to find funding, we'll have a better chance with all of us. If you're a student, we can help you get internship/practicum credits. We're in Vancouver, BC, but you don't have to be. We have the amazing Internet now.

If you want to be part of this, hit us up at beth.a.dillon@gmail.com.
